4 Steps Before Towing Your Junk Car
It’s time to clean up your driveway or garage, and towing your junk car away is a perfect start. But is your old beater worth any money? Do you still have all the paperwork naming you as the owner?
You must take multiple steps in order to answer these questions and make sure you not only get the maximum return on your junk vehicle but that you do not run into any legal issues during the process.
1. Research the Value
First, find out how much your junk car is worth. If it still runs, you may be able to donate it to a local charity or a mechanic school and earn a tax deduction.
If the vehicle doesn’t run, taking it apart and selling the working parts individually might earn you more cash. If you do not have experience working with vehicles, you might want to trust a mechanic friend or a dependable local salvage yard and have them inspect the vehicle before you dismantle it.
2. Get the Paperwork in Order
In nearly all circumstances, any charity or junkyard will want to see proof of ownership in the form of a clear title. You may have to show proof of registration as well, along with an official photo identification with your full name.
If you plan on having your junk car towed to a scrapyard, you will probably be required to fill out a form with your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles called a damage disclosure statement. You will have to file this with the local office and turn in the license plates.
3. Find a Reliable Towing Company
Some scrapyards may offer towing, but they also may charge a fee. You may be able to find a reliable towing company at a cheaper rate. Make sure you are getting a fair price so you can increase your profits.
4. Clean Out Your Possessions
Once you have found a future home for your junk car, make sure you remove all of your paperwork and possessions. Cars have a tendency to become a collection spot for your personal items, and if you’re selling it off to a junkyard or donating it to charity, they may want to make sure the entire vehicle is emptied beforehand.
