Safe Motorcycle Towing Tips

Motorcycle towing is designed to successfully transport one or more bikes to their intended destinations, but the towing mechanics depend on the tow vehicle’s capabilities, the number of motorcycles towed and the owner’s personal preferences. The following are a number of ways to safely tow a motorcycle and instructions on secure loading procedures.

Flatbed Trailers

If you already own a flatbed trailer, installing the necessary equipment to tow a motorcycle is simple. Attach a wheel chock to the bed of the trailer with screws or straps. A wheel chock stabilizes the front wheel so it can stand upright during transport. Transporting motorcycles on their sides is never recommended.

Two-Wheel Trailers

While a flatbed takes up significant space, some two-wheel trailers can fold up for storage in small spaces. Most two-wheel trailers have one axle, a flat surface large enough for a certain number of bikes and a hitch that connects to the tow vehicle.

Cradle Towing

Even simpler than the two-wheel trailer, a wheel cradle can be directly attached to the hitch of the tow vehicle. The front-wheel attaches to the cradle and the back wheel runs along the pavement during towing.

Loading and Securing the Motorcycle

With the exception of the tow cradle, which allows motorcycle owners to load at ground level, trailer towing requires a ramp. Put the motorcycle in first gear and accelerate at an extremely slow pace while walking it up the ramp. Never load a motorcycle at an angle – always keep it straight. Use the kickstand for assistance while initially attaching the tie-down straps, but release it before firmly attaching the motorcycle to the trailer, otherwise, the tension may cause it to break.

To securely tie down the motorcycle for transport, you will need four high-quality straps rated to withstand its weight and size — use either ratchet or cam buckle straps. Inspect each strap before use to make sure no tearing or loose threading will threaten the safety of the bike. You will also need four soft loops. These will connect the straps to the bike in order to prevent the metal buckle on the straps from harming the motorcycle.

For the front of the bike, attach a soft loop to each handlebar. Connect ratchet straps to each soft loop and attach the ends to the corresponding top corners of the trailer. Repeat the process for the rear of the bike after attaching soft loops to stable pieces of the motorcycle’s back frame. Never tie the motorcycle down too tightly, or the movement of the trailer can cause damage to the bike’s suspension.

Towing companies carry all the necessary equipment to tow a motorcycle, so call an experienced team like Stauffer’s Towing if your bike is stalled and needs transport.
