Hire A Towing Company That Follows The Law

Every towing company should follow the correct, lawful procedures when they transport your vehicle. States have regulations on towing for many crucial reasons, but the primary purpose is to make sure consumers’ property is protected.

Look for these three basic, yet essential, requirements in any towing company you consider, from a short-distance job to long-distance transport.

1. They Should Have the Right Insurance Coverage

Every reputable towing company should comply with the state’s requirements for insurance coverage. Why does the state require tow operators to carry a large insurance policy?

First of all, if the company damages your vehicle during transport, you should be able to collect money for repairs. Second, just like any vehicle on the road, a tow truck needs insurance coverage in case it is involved in an accident. It’s especially important since they are towing another vehicle as a service.

In many states, towing companies are required to obtain certification before they conduct business, and part of receiving this certification is proving insurance coverage.

2. They Should Be Licensed Operators

In order for a tow truck driver to be able to legally transport vehicles, whether for the police or for a private customer, they have to obtain the right classification of driver’s license. In order to qualify for this license, they have to undergo training from a recognized organization, such as the Towing and Recovery Association of America (TRAA) or the American Automobile Association (AAA).

In addition, certain states might require tow truck operators to pass a state-sponsored training program or test. They also are required to meet all federal safety regulations.

3. Their Equipment Should Be Inspected and Registered

Every tow truck in service is required to pass a state inspection. Once the vehicle meets all requirements, it will be issued a certification for operation in the state.

A tow truck inspection involves looking at the safety equipment on board. Does the truck have a working fire extinguisher? Are there enough safety chains and tie-down straps, and are they in good working order?

The truck also must have a data plate that states the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), or have the information on official documentation inside the truck for easy access. They must also list the boom, bed and wheel lift’s maximum load capacity. Only when all safety inspection regulations are met will the tow truck be legally cleared to operate in the state.
