Don’t Let A Dead Car Battery Leave You Stranded

If you have never been stuck with a dead car battery, consider yourself lucky, and probably in the minority. A dead battery is one of the most frequent reasons motorists need towing services. The good news is that you can avoid this hassle by staying aware of your car battery’s condition and replacing it before it’s too late.

Signs of a Failing Car Battery

The first sign your car battery isn’t functioning properly is if the engine requires multiple attempts to get it to start. You may also see a battery symbol light up on your vehicle dashboard, which signifies a malfunction in either the battery or one of the electrical systems powered by the battery.

Most batteries are designed to last between three and five years. If the label on the side, shows it is outdated, it is best to replace it before it dies, or at least bring it to a mechanic to see how much juice it has left.

If you open the hood and are hit with a rotten smell, this could be vented gas coming from a shorted battery – bring it to a mechanic right away.

Examine the Exterior

You also should examine the outside of the battery periodically, especially before harsh winter temperatures set in. If batteries are left in the cold for too long without being used, or exposed to high heat, they may expand and swell. The case could crack, causing acid to leak, which necessitates a replacement.

Clean the Terminals

Dirt, grime and corrosion can build up on the terminals, reducing effectiveness and contributing to the system’s degradation, so it’s a good idea to clean them periodically. With your vehicle turned off, remove the clamps from each terminal. Use a toothbrush, baking soda and water to scrub away the particles on the terminal ends, and then replace the clamps.

Also, check the condition of the cables connected to the terminals and replace any frayed parts for maximum performance.

Schedule a Battery Test

If you doubt your car battery is performing at its previous high level, get the voltage tested by your trusted mechanic. This is especially important if you are beginning a long road trip. The test will show how much life is left and if a replacement is due.
